About

Legal Guidance. Individual Attention.

Joshua Votaw founded The Votaw Law Firm to offer clients something elusive: affordable legal services from a seasoned attorney who handles all client matters personally instead of handing off to a junior associate.

Before starting his own practice, Joshua spent nearly fifteen years as General Counsel for multiple large New York City real estate companies. He has built legal departments from the ground up, managed litigation portfolios involving hundreds of cases, and personally represented his clients in state and federal courts—handling discovery, depositions, motion practice, trials, and appeals. He's negotiated contracts with vendors, government agencies, and opposing counsel across every kind of dispute.

That in-house experience shapes how Joshua practices today. He understands what clients actually need: direct answers, realistic assessments, and an attorney who returns calls promptly. He's been on the client side of the relationship for over a decade, and it shows in how he works.

Joshua began his legal career with clerkships in the United States District Court for the District of Puerto Rico, serving first under Chief Magistrate Judge Justo Arenas and then under Chief District Judge Aida M. Delgado-Colón. Working at the highest levels of the federal judiciary gave him rigorous training in legal analysis, research, and writing—skills he brings to every matter he handles.

He continues to serve the legal system as a volunteer judge-arbitrator in New York City's small claims courts.

Education & Credentials

Joshua earned his J.D. from Northeastern University School of Law in 2010. This fall, he will begin pursuing a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Taxation at Georgetown University Law Center.

Community & Personal

Joshua lives in the Hudson Valley and serves on the Board of Directors of the Sleepy Hollow Tarrytown Chamber of Commerce, where he co-chairs the Merchants' Committee a liaison between local businesses and municipal government.

When he's not practicing law, Joshua is usually planning his next trip. In 2023, he took a few months off to hike over 1,000 miles of New Zealand's Te Araroa Trail—a trek spanning the entire length of the southern island.
